Simply spreading a totally natural mineral and organic product and allowing the horses to work it into the footing is the ultimate in dust control. This Canadian made product combines zeolite, magnesium and an organic substance to automatically control the moisture in the footing.
The magnesium absorbs the moisture from the air, and is also natural antifreeze. Zeolite, which is considered one of nature’s miracle products, stores the moisture or releases it as required by the condition of the footing. The priority organics act as a synergist as well as odour control and help speed up break down of any waste droppings to help extend footing life.
This “Just Add Arenas” environmental system will work
with almost any exigging “indoor footing mixtures. This
natural system is qetisl healthier alternative to oiling.
Most oils are petroleum based, and can seep down through
footing and contaminate ground water. Oiled footing also
becomes an environmental hazard, when footing needs to
be replaced.
Disposal of footing that has “Just Add Arenas” applied is
not an issue. The formula is also healthier for hooves than
traditional calcium or salt mixtures.
To put it down the manufacturer, Alex Milne Associates
Ltd, a company that specializes in environmental horse care
products and partly owned by the Ontario government,
suggests you deep harrow the arena, then simply use a
spreader to put the required amount down. Regular riding
traffic works it in.
In most arenas it is suggested to begin by applying a 50Ibs
box ($69.95) for every 175 sq ft. Obviously, every footing
is different, and it is best to creep up on the system and
not overkill. The boxes will fit into a pickup truck to help
reduce transportation costs. Most arenas Can expect to do
a 30% top up after about two years. Simply, deep harrow
and top up to revive the system. Considering this process,
the average cost over 4 years on a standard 60 x 120 arena
(7,200 sq ft) would be about $950 annually.
